 Arts Commission Invites Indiana High Schools to Participate in 2015 Poetry Out Loud Competition The tenth annual Poetry Out Loud Indiana State Finals competition will take place on February 21, 2015 in Indianapolis. Indiana high schools are encouraged to participate in this annual poetry recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation. The 2015 event marks the tenth anniversary for Poetry Out Loud both in Indiana and nationally.   Registration is currently open for the 2015 competition. Schools must register in advance to take part in the Poetry Out Loud competition. Registration for schools is open until November 21, 2014, and information on local winners is due by January 23, 2015.   The winner of the state championship will represent Indiana at the 2014/2015 Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C. in late April. Emma Libersky, Plymouth High School, Plymouth, was the 2013/2014 Indiana State Champion, and the first person to earn that title in successive years.   A total of $50,000 in scholarship awards and school stipends will be awarded at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, with a $20,000 college scholarship awarded to the national champion.The state champion receives a $200 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals. The state champion’s school receives a $500 stipend to purchase poetry books.

Game Developer Gathering Expands to Monthly Schedule  Capitalizing on the local energy sparked by the Sigma Play game conference, the Bloomington Indie Game Night (BIG Night), a gathering of all kinds of game developers and enthusiasts, is switching from a quarterly to a monthly schedule. Every third Monday of the month, game fans and designers can now visit the Monroe County Public Library to network, playtest, and learn more about how games are made. Attendance is free and members of the public of all ages are welcome to attend. The next BIG Night meeting will be on Monday, August 18th at 6:30pm in Meeting Room 1C of the Monroe County Public Library. Mike Sellers, a new faculty member in the IU Media School and veteran game designer, will be at the meeting to discuss his experiences, including work on Meridian 59, SimCity Online, Ultima Online, and Sims 2. Free Talk: Who’s George “Rabbit” Shively? Bloomington’s Forgotten Negro Leagues Baseball Star – A free talk by Phil S. Dixon, baseball historian Opening remarks by Bob Hammel Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 6pm Monroe County History Center (202 East 6th Street, Bloomington, Indiana) Phil S. Dixon is widely regarded as one of America’s foremost experts on baseball history. He has published six books on the history of the Negro Leagues. Dixon formerly worked in the Public Relations Department of the Kansas City Royals major league baseball team, and currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, an organization which he served as a co-founder in 1990. He was awarded the prestigious Casey Award for the “Best Baseball Book” of 1992, and a Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) MacMillan Award for his excellence in baseball research Bob Hammel, an Indiana sportswriter for 52 years, has been honored innumerable times by his profession. He covered IU athletics for the Bloomington Herald-Times for 30 years. A native of Huntington, he has lived in Bloomington for the last 48 years. He is a member of the board of directors of both the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame and the Monroe County Historical Society. Not in BEAD but Still Awesome:  The Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale and Bloomington Resale Trail The Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale, now in its 5th year, is an effort by the City of Bloomington, Habitat for Humanity, and Indiana University 1) to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out, 2) to prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members, and 3) to raise funds for local charities.  The 2014 sale is on August 23 from 8am-1pm and August 24 from 11am-2pm at “The Warehouse,” located at 1525 S. Rogers in Bloomington.  $10 admission before 9:30am on Saturday.   The Resale Trail coordinates Hoosier to Hoosier and five other locations into Bloomington’s biggest garage sale.  Habitat Restore, Bloominglabs, the Near West Side Neighborhood Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Vintage Vogue, and IU Surplus Stores are all participants this year. For more information on both events, visit h2h.indiana.edu or emailh2h@indiana.edu.

3rd Annual Grant Street Jazz Fest  Showcasing Bloomington’s finest jazz talent, the Grant St. Jazz Fest is a truly unique musical experience.  From the infectious strut of a New Orleans inspired brass band to the jaunty clave of a Latin octet, our festival has something for every jazz lover (not to mention delectable offerings from local food and drink proprietors).  This event takes place on Saturday, August 23 from 12 until 11 p.m. on Grant St. between Kirkwood and 6th. This event is free of admission and open to all ages. Not in BEAD, but You Should Go! Selling Art, Craft and Foods with Ease: Bruce Baker all-day workshop Art world’s most prolific speaker/teacher leads workshop for artists and food producers Bruce Baker will return to Indiana Tue., Sept. 9, for an all-day workshop focused on helping artists and  value-added food producers increase sales. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Fishers, Baker will focus on two integrated topics – space design and merchandising, and leveraging trends for product development.  A 2010 Resolution by the Indiana General Assembly tasked Indiana Artisan with reviewing, recognizing and  promoting the work of Indiana’s highest-quality art and food artisans. It is hosting a Holiday Marketplace, in  Fort Wayne’s Grand Wayne Center Nov. 29 and 30, and one goal of Baker’s workshop is to help participants  think about merchandising their work for the strongest potential sales. This workshop is open to all artists and food producers in Indiana, and lessons can be applied year-round, not just for increased holiday sales.

Save the date, Meet the Funders Tuesday, September 23 from 9:00 am – 1 :00 pm A 60 minute presentation and Q&A session will be followed by several 25-minute informal group sessions with area funding organizations to discuss their  motivations and the types of giving programs that they offer. The session will end with a mini resource fair. Coming Up Soon: Science Night Out – WonderLab Fundraiser Science Night Out Benefit to Support Science Education at WonderLab Discount Tickets Available Through August 17  The WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology invites adults to discover their inner spy as they support the museum’s science education mission at the benefit gala Science Night Out: Shaken, Not Stirred. This year, the annual event is inspired by James Bond and will take place on Friday, September 5, in the evocative setting of the historic Woolery Stone Mill, with indoor, tented and outdoor 007-themed experiences.    Guests will arrive in style on a red carpet as the event begins at 6 p.m. Whether they choose to dress in costume as a Bond movie character or not, attendees will enjoy a Hollywood-style greeting with a photo opportunity. Inside they’ll find gourmet global cuisine buffet stations provided by One World Catering and cocktail bars staffed by Malibu Grill and stocked by Oliver Winery, Quaff On! Bloomington, and the Scholar’s Inn.    In addition, there will be spy-themed science activities for grown-ups. These include a laser maze and a pick-a-lock station provided by Bloominglabs, the “beernouli” pong challenge, the potato gun target practice range, and the make-an-explosion chemistry area. At the wine wall, guests will be able to make a $25 donation for a wine cork that matches a bottle on the wall and then use special spy decoding techniques to discover whether the value of the bottle they’ve selected is worth the same as the donation or is much more valuable. Guests also will be able to put together a custom box of Peacetree Mountain artisan wine truffles to take home with a donation matched to the size of the box.   The live auction will be hosted by Brad Holtz, WTTS program director and on-air host. He also will select the winning name for the 50/50 cash raffle and will conduct the finals of the Bond character costume contest. After the auction, the Vallures will take the stage to provide live music for dancing. Late into the evening, DJs Heath Byers and Jonathan Richardson will spin dance music.   Science Night Out: Shaken, Not Stirred’s goal is to raise $80,000 (net) for two purposes: to support WonderLab’s hands-on science education activities in general and also to support the museum’s Connecting to the Community Fund, which provides opportunities for low-income children to access WonderLab’s services. WonderLab is an award-winning science museum serving more than 84,000 onsite visitors and over 5,000 individuals by outreach services throughout south and central Indiana, as well as more than 560 Indiana University students as interns and volunteers. Creating Vibrant Communities through the Arts is coming to Munster, IN October 9 & 10!  Back by popular demand, this two-day conference on economic development through arts integration is presented by the Indiana Arts Commission, Ball State University’s Building Better Communities and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Visit Bloomington Tourism Grants – deadline October 1 Visit Bloomington is pleased to announce the continuation of a successful grant program that will provide marketing funds to Bloomington area festivals and events. Events must be scheduled to take place between January 1 and December 31, 2015. Completed applications will be accepted beginning June 1, 2014 through October 1, 2014.  Applicants must be organizations seeking to produce and promote a well-defined tourism-oriented festival or event within Monroe County.   Grant funds may be used for marketing the event through advertising placed outside the Bloomington area, the production of promotional pieces to be distributed outside the area and event web site development. The maximum funding level for any single event is $5,000. To be considered for grant funding, events must be held within the boundaries of Monroe County, must be open to the general public and must show potential to draw visitors from outside the Monroe County area.  Grant guidelines and a sample grant application can be found here.

H2H Community Sale Pick-up & Sorting Volunteers – Aug. 18-24 It takes hundreds of volunteers to make the Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale come together. IU Art Museum Visitor Services Volunteer Needed We are looking for Volunteers to staff our museum Information Desk on Saturdays and Sundays. Bloomington Writing Project The Bloomington Writing Project is seeking volunteers to teach basic grammar and writing skills to adults. Hillbilly Haiku Music Festival – Aug. 29 Kick off Labor Day weekend with good food, good beer, and good music at the Hillbilly Haiku Music Festival, an outdoor concert hosted by Upland Brewing Co. Every year, this festival seeks out the best grassroots music the Midwest has to offer and pairs it with Indiana grassroots beer, with proceeds donated to Sycamore Land Trust! Volunteers will set up, staff the admissions table, serve food, clean up and, in return, receive free admission, food, and drinks! Each volunteer will work two shifts between3:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 29. Alternatively, you can volunteer for one short clean-up shift onAug. 30 and earn free admission, food, and drinks on Friday night. Minimum age is 18. City Parks Department Accepting Applications for 2014 Art and Fine Craft Fair Vendors The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department invites local and regional artists to apply to participate in the 2014 Holiday Market.   Holiday Market is one of the largest events in Bloomington with thousands attending to buy art and fine crafts created by local artisans as well as locally grown products, all while listening to the music of the season. The TubaSantas fill the Market with holiday spirit, and St. Nick and his reindeer will visit too!   Artists may apply to participate in Holiday Market online. Applications are available at bloomington.in.gov/holidaymarket. There is a non-refundable, $15 jury fee per application.   To receive full consideration, applications must be received by September 5, 2014 at 5 p.m.   Criteria for selecting artists for Holiday Market include style of work (divided into 10 categories: clay, drawing/painting/photography, fiber arts, glass, jewelry, metalwork/woodwork, natural materials, recycled arts, surface decoration, and personal care); quality of work, price of work, and variety of artists.

IU Art Museum is Looking for Musicians, Poets, and Dancers! The IUAM is looking for musicians, poets, and dancers, who focus on traditional and/or folkloric music from around the world, to perform at the museum on September 5, 2014  from 6:30 to 8:30 at a new event “MIX”. The performers would be playing in the galleries mirroring the cultures displayed in the gallery exhibits, fusing art, music, dance, and poetry. This is a paid opportunity for the performers. New in the Galleries: A Feast for the Eyes: Weston’s Produce Pictures July 1–December 21, 2014 Gallery of the Art of the Western World, Doris Steinmetz Kellett Endowed Gallery of Twentieth-Century Art, first floor California-based modernist photographer Edward Weston shocked the art world in the 1920s with his close-ups of fruits and vegetables. With his crisp formalism and rich tonal printing, the simplest everyday objects became surprisingly sensual and evocative.

Yoga in the Atrium Saturdays 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. through October 25. Beginner classes are offered on the first and third Saturdays of each month. More advanced classes are held on the second and fourth Saturdays. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat and water bottle, dress comfortably, and arrive early to grab a spot in the first come, first served classes. Due to the popularity of the program and in order to maintain a peaceful environment, indoor classes will be capped at twenty-three participants. No registration is required.
