Explore Quilting at WonderLab on First Friday Evening

Extend the experience of the 24th Annual Indiana Heritage Quilt Show (IHQS) by checking out First Friday Evening Science of Art: Quilting on Friday, March 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology. Meet featured Indiana artist Lisa Dodson from Martinsville, and watch her demonstrate the creative process by which she illustrates a microscopic and macroscopic view of nature. In related activities, museum visitors will get to explore the concept of a quilt block by making a fabric postcard to send through the mail and will receive one-on-one instruction and basic hands-on experience using a sewing machine, a key quilting tool. The first forty visitors to arrive after 5:00 p.m. also will get a free Fractiles gift. Fractiles is an award-winning magnetic tiling toy for ages six and up. It teaches geometry by using visual perception to build pattern recognition skills.

There is an exhibition of Ms. Dodson’s quilts, Love of Nature, on display at WonderLab through April 15. Adult IHQS attendees, age 18 and older with a valid 2015 IHQS wristband or stamp, will receive free admission at WonderLab anytime March 5-7 to see this IHQS community partner exhibition. During First Friday Evening, other visitors will enjoy half-price general museum admission ($3.50) from 5:00 p.m. until the museum closes. A small plate meal, freshly prepared by Bloomingfoods, will be available to buy in the WonderLab café. Free parking spaces can be found in the 4th Street Parking Garage after 6:00 p.m.

First Friday Evening Science of Art: Quilting is sponsored by F. Rudolf Turner with additional grant support from Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington, the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The monthly program series is part of WonderLab’s mission to highlight the connections between science and art.

WonderLab is an award-winning science museum and destination located at 308 West Fourth Street on the B-Line Trail in the heart of the downtown Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD). For more information, call 812-337-1337 ext. 25 or go online to wonderlab.org.
