Art world’s most recognized speaker/teacher leads workshop for artists and food producers


On Tue., Jan. 28, Indiana artists will learn how to approach the sales process and increase the sale of their work when Indiana Artisan hosts Bruce Baker for an all-day workshop. Baker talks specifically about art promotion and sales, not on the broad topic of sales. His workshop, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Fishers Library, will include a working lunch from McAlister’s Deli.
Baker will discuss dynamic sales and customer service techniques, along with topics specific to trade shows, including the Indiana Artisan Marketplace: how to get into shows, build and light an effective booth display, merchandise foods and art for the most impact, and close the sale. He also will give participants tips on interacting with customers, understanding how the sale is advancing, reading body language, breaking the ice with a booth visitor, and increasing the total sale.
A jeweler who retails his work nationally, Baker has served as secretary of the American Craft Council board, was a founding member and vice chair of the American Craft Association, is a board member of the Vermont State Craft Center at Frog Hollow, owner of two galleries in New England, producer of three CDs on art sales and selling, and has for decades been recognized as the primary authority teaching artists and craftspeople how to merchandise and more effectively sell their work. “Did you ever notice when you are at a show or sales event there always is one person around you who seems to get most of the business – that individual who has “gravity” and pulls people into their space while people line up to buy?” Baker asks. “With the right kind of behavior, that could be you.”
“If you attend his workshop and apply his techniques, you will make back your workshop fee in the first hours of your next show,” said Indiana Artisan Carol Bell, a Noblesville-based clay artist. Following my first Baker workshop, my very next show I doubled sales from the same show the year before,” she said.
The Indiana General Assembly passed a Resolution in 2010, making Indiana Artisan the state’s official organization to review, recognize and promote the work of Indiana’s highest-quality art and food artisans. As a non-profit corporation, Indiana Artisan continues the mission of developing a brand that gives meaning and recognition to exceptional Indiana-made work. The organization is hosting the workshop to benefit all Hoosier artists, craftspeople and value-added food producers. For Indiana Artisans, it is part of a series to help them maximize the organization’s Indiana Artisan Marketplace. The fourth annual event is Sat. and Sun., March 29 and 30, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Exposition Hall. Dubbed “Indiana’s premiere art and food event,” the Marketplace is a showcase of high-quality arts, crafts and foods produced in the state.
“Yes, the economy is weak in most parts of the country,” Baker said, “yet I meet people every week who are seeing significant business growth. With the right attitude and good vision, it is not difficult to have a growing business even in this lame economy.”
