Lauren Stern ”Trying Not to Do Portraits”
Show Date
December 2nd – February 1st
Show Description
Portraits and landscapes in mixed media by Bloomington native, and IU Alum, Lauren Stern.
Artist’s Statement:
“There are a lot of heads and portraits in your body of work. It would be nice to see somethingelse.”
– Distinguished Professor
Challenge accepted… and then rejected. I don’t quite have an affinity for the written language. I communicate my observations through paint, graphite, and charcoal.Brushstrokes and color are my adjectives while compositions create my nouns.
I consider these landscapes to be portraits. They are an overall view concentrated into what I find most interesting and visually stimulating. Much like a portrait, I start my landscapes in the same way. Color blocking the surface allows me to begin knowing my subject. Finalizing details on the focal area, or face, solidifies our relationship. These paintings are all portraits. They invite you to become intimate with my selected portion of a larger existence.
