On Tuesday evening October 23rd, beginning at 5:30pm., The Venue will host a presentation by Dr. Mark Braun, on the mask traditions and wood carving techniques of the of Native Americans of the Northwest Coast, as exemplified by his mask carvings.

In the mid 1990s Mark, a pathologist and faculty member at Indiana University, began studying Native American shamanic art and became interested in Native masks, their meaning, and especially how they are made. That interest quickly combined with his love of woodworking. While not a Native American, Mark was fortunate to be able to work with several mask carvers of the Northwest Coast as he developed his carving skills and advanced his understanding of this Native American tradition. Most of his carvings are made from Alder, the traditional wood of Northwest Coast Native Americans, and he uses only non-motorized hand tools and knives. Mark’s presentation will be informative, interactive and fun.

The Venue will provide refreshments for this event. Our complete collection of Fine Art and Gifts will also be on display for viewing and purchase. Free parking will be available in the lot on the corner of 4th and Grant.
